In a statement released after the talks concluded in Switzerland, Oman's Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi expressed optimism, stating that the US and Iran had made substantial strides towards a resolution. He further revealed that the two sides plan to reconvene in Vienna, Austria's capital, next week to continue negotiations.
While the US has remained silent on the matter, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the talks as intense and lengthy, indicating the seriousness of the discussions. He emphasized that Iran had clearly outlined its expectations, leaving little room for ambiguity.
A Framework for a Deal?
An anonymous senior Iranian official hinted at a potential framework for an agreement, suggesting that a separation of nuclear and non-nuclear issues could pave the way for a deal. This proposal seems to have gained traction, as evidenced by the planned resumption of talks.
The talks, mediated by Oman, were held between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Witkoff, a special Mideast envoy and a close friend of President Donald Trump, has been tasked with persuading Iran to halt its uranium enrichment and missile production.
However, Iran has maintained its position, asserting that it will continue enriching uranium despite the devastation caused by the US attack on its nuclear sites last June. If the US were to launch another attack, Iran has warned that all US military bases in the Middle East would become legitimate targets, and Israel could also face retaliation.
