Ghostface is back and breaking records! 'Scream 7' has absolutely slashed its way to an incredible $97.2 million in its opening weekend globally, proving the enduring power of this iconic horror franchise.
This latest chapter in the Paramount and Spyglass Media saga has raked in $33.1 million from international markets and a hefty $64.1 million right here in North America. What's truly remarkable is that these figures represent record-breaking numbers for the entire 'Scream' franchise, which first terrified audiences back in 1996. It's a testament to how far this series has come!
But here's where it gets interesting: The seventh installment was helmed by Kevin Williamson, the brilliant mind behind the original 'Scream.' This time, the story centers on a new Ghostface killer targeting the daughter of the legendary Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell. And speaking of Neve, her return to the franchise after sitting out the previous film due to a salary dispute is a huge part of the buzz. Many believe that the wave of nostalgia for her character, along with the comeback of other beloved original cast members like Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Matthew Lillard, played a significant role in drawing crowds to theaters for this massive opening weekend.
And this is the part most people miss: The film's impressive debut wasn't just about star power. Premium screen formats like IMAX and ScreenX contributed significantly, accounting for 40% of the total box office earnings. This is actually the very first 'Scream' film to ever be shown in IMAX, offering audiences a more immersive and thrilling experience than ever before.
Gary Barber, the Chairman and CEO of Spyglass Media, expressed his delight, stating, "This historic, franchise record-breaking box office performance is a testament to the enduring legacy created by our director Kevin Williamson 30 years ago, led by the incomparable Neve Campbell, breakout star Isabel May, legacy stalwart Courteney Cox and the entire cast." He added, "We are truly grateful to audiences around the world who enthusiastically showed up to theaters, ready for another thrilling Ghostface experience."
The marketing team at Paramount really pulled out all the stops to ensure 'Scream 7' appealed not just to die-hard fans but also to a new generation of horror enthusiasts. They strategically placed the film's promotion during high-profile events like the Super Bowl and even had Ghostface make appearances at exciting venues like UFC 324 in Las Vegas.
Josh Goldstine, Paramount's President of Global Marketing and Distribution, acknowledged the challenge of marketing a seventh film in a long-running series. He explained, "We focused on bringing in the nostalgia. This is ‘Scream’s’ 30th anniversary, and we have Neve back. We focused the promotion on this sense of destiny and ‘it’s all led to this.'"
Internationally, 'Scream 7' is also outperforming its predecessors. Ticket sales in these markets are a remarkable 35% higher than those of 'Scream VI' during the same period. For context, 'Scream VI' earned $58 million overseas and $166 million globally. The biggest international openings for 'Scream 7' so far include the United Kingdom with $5.3 million, followed by France ($4.2 million), Mexico ($3 million), Australia ($2.5 million), and Germany ($2.4 million). However, the film has yet to be released in key markets like Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.
This success comes as a welcome relief for Paramount, marking their first No. 1 release since last March's 'Novocaine.' This is particularly significant given Paramount's recent bold move to outbid Netflix for control of Warner Bros. Discovery. While the company's CEO has assured stakeholders, some theater owners are understandably concerned that this major media merger could lead to fewer new films hitting the big screen during an already challenging time for the industry. Elsewhere at the global box office:
'Wuthering Heights' is on the cusp of reaching an impressive $200 million worldwide after just three weekends. Director Emerald Fennell's unique take on the literary classic has garnered $119.7 million internationally and $72.3 million domestically, bringing its total to $192 million. With a production budget of $80 million, this film is continuing a strong box office streak for Warner Bros., following hits like 'Sinners,' 'A Minecraft Movie,' and 'Weapons.'
Sony's animated original, 'GOAT,' has also shown remarkable staying power, accumulating $130.5 million worldwide. This includes $56.6 million from international markets and $53.9 million domestically. 'GOAT,' which had an $80 million production cost, is expected to face some competition next weekend with the arrival of Disney and Pixar's 'Hoppers.'
