This is the grim reality for residents of three communities in northern Nigeria, where a brutal attack by motorcycle-riding gunmen has left at least 46 people dead and countless others abducted. A resident of Konkoso recounted to AFP that the gunmen first targeted Tungar Makeri before moving on to his village. Wasiu Abiodun, the Niger State police spokesperson, confirmed the attack, stating that six people were killed in Tunga-Makeri, several houses were burned, and an unknown number of residents were abducted. The assailants then proceeded to Konkoso, though details of the other attacks remain unclear.
Jeremiah Timothy, another Konkoso resident, described the attackers entering the village around 6 a.m. (05:00 GMT), firing indiscriminately. Despite the chaos, residents reported hearing military jets overhead, raising questions about why security forces were seemingly absent during the attack. “They were operating freely without the presence of any security,” Abdullahi Adamu, a local, told The Associated Press.
And this is the part most people miss: The Kainji Forest, located along the border between Niger and Kwara states, has become a notorious haven for bandits, fighters, and even members of the armed group Boko Haram. This attack is just the latest in a series of violent incidents plaguing northern Nigeria, where armed groups affiliated with ISIL (ISIS) and criminal gangs demanding ransoms have created a complex security crisis.
Last October, the al-Qaeda-affiliated Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) claimed responsibility for its first attack on Nigerian soil, near Woro in Kwara State.
