A heartbreaking story of resilience and determination unfolds on the Gold Coast, where a brave toddler named Goldie is battling an incredibly rare cancer. This little fighter, known as "Golden Bean" to her loving family, has been diagnosed with a condition so uncommon that she is one of the very few children worldwide facing this challenge.
Goldie's journey began with a worrying decline in her motor skills, progressing from almost taking her first steps to a devastating collapse, leaving her unable to bear any weight. Her family, sensing something was amiss, repeatedly voiced their concerns and requested imaging, but it wasn't until months later that the true extent of her condition was revealed.
The scans showed a large tumour crushing nerves in her spine, a shocking discovery that left her parents reeling. "We were devastated to learn our daughter had cancer, and not just any cancer, but the world's rarest and most aggressive form, located in her spine and pelvis," shared Goldie's mother, Maddison Bennett, a former Jillaroo.
Goldie, who had not even turned two when diagnosed, underwent emergency spinal surgery to address the extra-cranial malignant rhabdoid tumour. This bright and bubbly girl has already shown incredible strength, enduring four rounds of chemotherapy, but now faces another urgent need: radiation therapy.
"Radiation for a 20-month-old baby is an intense and potentially life-altering treatment, and we want to ensure Goldie receives the best care possible, which unfortunately is not available here in Australia," explained Bennett.
The rarity of Goldie's case has led to a frustrating battle with the health system's red tape, delaying her access to potentially life-saving treatment overseas. "It feels like we've been left to fend for ourselves as a family," Bennett shared, expressing her frustration.
Time is of the essence, as Goldie requires specialized proton therapy in Singapore next month. Proton therapy is a more advanced form of radiation that can precisely target the tumour, minimizing radiation exposure to healthy surrounding tissue.
The family has started a fundraiser (https://give.rarecancers.org.au/fundraisers/goldierose/helping-goldie-rose) to cover the costs of this life-changing treatment, including urgent travel, extended accommodation, and medical insurance.
"Goldie deserves every chance at a full and healthy life. She is a true fighter, and we are determined to give her the best possible chance," Bennett said with unwavering determination.
This story serves as a reminder of the power of resilience and the importance of supporting those facing rare and challenging medical conditions. Will you join Goldie's fight and help spread awareness? The power of community support can make a world of difference.
