And this is the part most people miss: Shelton's efforts are paying off. He spent time with catcher Ryan Jeffers over Thanksgiving, and their strong communication paid dividends when the Twins signed catcher Victor Caratini. Jeffers was given the chance to ask questions before the news broke, a level of transparency that's rare and appreciated.
But it's not just about individual meetings. Shelton is also actively participating in drills and spending quality time with the players. The improved communication could be a game-changer, and Shelton's already making a positive impact in the clubhouse.
Liam Hendriks: A New Arm, A New Chance
The Twins are showing patience with Liam Hendriks, an Australian righty who's hard on himself. After facing live hitters for the first time since July, Hendriks is working on his fastball, which topped out at 92 mph. One observer noted that his off-speed pitches looked good, but there's still work to be done.
Hendriks is excited to analyze his biomechanics using the Twins' motion capture technology. He believes he hasn't fully recovered from his 2023 Tommy John surgery but is confident he can still be effective. His next step is another live bullpen session or a spring training game appearance.
"It's a whole new arm," Hendriks says. "Now, it's about building stamina, being game-ready, and waiting for the lights to turn on."
The Rising Star: Kendry Rojas
The Twins are excited about left-hander Kendry Rojas, and it's easy to see why. Acquired in the Louis Varland trade, Rojas' fastball averaged an impressive 97.1 mph, and he generated five swings and misses in just 24 pitches against the Atlanta Braves. Rojas, 23, struggled at Triple A last year, but he's adjusting to the talent and the different baseballs used at that level.
"I'm more comfortable with the newer ball now," Rojas says. The Twins believe he'll only get better with more experience. Beyond his talent, Rojas' willingness to learn and ask questions is a big plus, according to Twins observer Johan Santana.
"He's eager to learn, and that's important," Santana says. "It puts you in a good position to succeed."
Learning from the Best: Byron Buxton's Impact
The Twins made a smart move by stationing outfield prospects Walker Jenkins and Kaelen Culpepper near Buxton's locker. Culpepper, who was initially far from Buxton, is now right next to him, and Jenkins is just to his right. This proximity allows Culpepper to pick Buxton's brain more easily.
"It's cool," Culpepper says. "He's always open to talking, and he loves it. He'll talk about anything. That's what I love about him."
A New Curveball for Connor Prielipp
Connor Prielipp, aiming to remain a starting pitcher, added a curveball this off-season. Although he threw a curveball earlier in his career, it evolved into a slider over time. Adding a new curveball has been a smooth transition for Prielipp, who pitched 82 2/3 innings in the minors last season.
While his goal is to stay as a starter, Prielipp is open to a bullpen role if needed. The Twins see him as a potential relief candidate, but for now, he'll build up as a starter.
"Being healthy for a full year was my main goal," Prielipp says. "The Twins managed my workload well. As long as I'm playing baseball, I'm happy, but I'd love to be a starter for as long as possible."
Can Marco Raya Become a Bullpen Fixture?
Marco Raya, a 25-year-old right-hander, has shown promise this spring with his aggressive approach in the strike zone. After moving to the bullpen last season, Raya is focused on relief work. The Twins believe he has the talent to challenge hitters, and his recent performances back this up.
"The Odd Couple" of the Clubhouse
One of the most entertaining aspects of camp is the dynamic between Liam Hendriks and veteran relief pitcher Andrew "Big Country" Chafin. Their personalities and unfiltered opinions make for interesting conversations and interviews. Even with the absence of leaders like Buxton and Joe Ryan during the World Baseball Classic, the clubhouse remains lively, thanks to the veterans who ensure a fun and appropriate environment for the younger players.
"Sometimes, young players can be overwhelmed," Shelton says. "Adding personalities like Hendriks and Chafin makes it more fun, especially as spring training excitement wears off."
